Nov. 8--WHAT DOES America look like this morning? Even though we don't know at this writing whether the U.S. Senate will follow the U.S. House in turning from red to blue, we can say something about the true colors of America by looking at the sheer numbers of the vote.

"Drop-offs" is political slang for voters who come out in presidential years but stay home for the midterms. This year, the election might have turned on the people who stayed home, not the people who voted.

But this year, many drop-offs got off the couch and out to the polling places. A huge turnout approached presidential-year levels in some states. It could be because Americans …
