X-ray technique may become ULSD test standard.(UNITED STATES)

A senior research scientist at X-Ray Optical Systems, East Greenbush, NY has won a prestigious industry award for developing a technique that may help to standardise measurement of sulphur in ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel. Dr Sewu Chen took ISA's (formerly Instrument Society of America) 2006 Arnold O. Beckman Founder Award for his work on novel, doubly-curved, focusing monochromatic optics with a new configuration X-ray fluorescence system.

The award coincides with the enactment of a new standard which makes ULSD at 15 ppm sulphur the standard for on-road vehicles in the US. The Environmental Protection Agency has relaxed the rules on refineries' testing …
