The Environmental Protection Agency has launched its Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) Programme with the aim of reducing US dependence on foreign oil by doubling the use of renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel.
The programme, authorised by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, will promote use of fuels largely produced by American crops by extending fuels producers' obligation to include biofuels in road fuel formulations.
A national RFS is designed to expand the use of biodiesel and ethanol, creating new markets for farm products and greater energy security.
