Weak in the middle SA tends to occupy the midpoint in international rankings of corruption. Its performance is neither exemplary nor piratical. However, many South Africans perceive corruption to be one of the most serious problems facing the country and feel government is not doing enough to combat the scourge.

Government and the UN Office on Drugs & Crime published a country corruption report on SA in 2003. It included three surveys on perceptions and experiences of corruption: a household survey; a business survey; and a survey of the public service and its clients.
