The Central Azucarera de San Antonio in Iloilo will put up a 14- megawatt (MW) biomass cogeneration plant which will supply additional power to its sugar mill factory as well as help supply the province's electricity requirements, the Department of Energy yesterday said.

The project, scheduled for commercial commissioning by the first quarter of 2007, will require a total investment of roughly P1.6 billion.

The Energy department said the facility will use sugarcane bagasse to fuel the 14-MW capacity. Sugarcane bagasse is a refuse from sugar milling operations.
