Managed Health Network awaiting approval on state application

A Los Angeles-based managed care company plans to expand its presence in Houston by opening the state's first health maintenance organization dealing exclusively with mental health and substance abuse.

Managed Health Network Inc. recently filed an application with the Texas Department of Insurance for an HMO license. If the permit is approved, the company would assume the risk of writing fully insured mental health plans targeted to businesses with fewer than 300 employees.

The firm also plans to roll out the HMO in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and in San Antonio.
