Byline: Bob Emanuel Jr.
Oct. 29--After Florida Atlantic escaped the tortuous non-conference portion of its schedule, its defense began to emerge as the team's strength.
In the previous three games, the unit allowed just 31 points and surrendered just one touchdown over eight quarters. Meanwhile, the offense continued to lag.
On Saturday afternoon, the Owls showed they were capable of a complete performance.
Cornerback Corey Small had a school-record three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and the defense forced six turnovers in the Owls' 29-0 victory against Arkansas State before 8,129 fans at Lockhart Stadium.
"We will expect them to play like this now," Owls coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "They will expect to play like this from now on. To me, this was a major step in the development of our program."
After it forced a punt on the Indians' opening drive, FAU (3-5, 2-1 Sun Belt) went 79 yards on 21 plays. The drive was capped by a 21-yard field goal by Warley Leroy to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.
