Oct. 29--COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- New triggerman, same late-game blanks.
And Florida State's season tumbles to levels not seen since Bobby Bowden began laying his legacy.
A surprise start by Xavier Lee came up empty Saturday night when Gary Cismesia's potential tying field goal was blocked with 42 seconds left, preserving Maryland's 27-24 triumph.
Jeremy Navarre knifed through the left side to swat down Cismesia's 46-yard attempt, sending FSU (4-4, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) into November without a winning record for the first time in 30 years.
Lee, given his first career start when Drew Weatherford couldn't go on a bad right ankle, drove the Seminoles to the Terps 15 with less than a minute left. But a flag for intentional grounding and a drop by Greg Carr preceded the blocked kick.
"I would love to have come out with a win," Lee said. "There were a couple plays here and there that we could have pulled it out. We played well as a team, but we just have to finish."
