Oct. 29--JACKSONVILLE -- Urban Meyer lifted his head to the heavens Saturday, grateful for surviving a 21-14 victory against a Georgia team that showed every indication it was ready to get blown out.
"Thank God for great defense," Meyer said.
Meyer didn't thank Oregon State, but he should have.
The Beavers did more to help Meyer's team than Florida's offense Saturday by knocking off unbeaten Southern Cal 33-31 to open the way for the Gators to possibly make their way to the national title game.
UF, sixth in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, needed some luck to get to the national championship game, and the Gators got just that by USC's fall to unranked Oregon State.
So on a day when Meyer's offense was a stale as day-old beer against a team that gave up 51 points to Tennessee, the Gators were able to make a big move nationally.
