Oct. 29--The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets swarmed to the student section of Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday evening, raising their gold helmets skyward while the marching band blasted I'm a Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech.
Meanwhile, 100 yards downfield, Miami players walked solemnly into the visitors' field house -- dejected, disgusted and defeated.
On this crisp autumn day, it was the Rambling Wreck who did the wrecking, a 30-23 victory that all but ended Miami's hope for an Atlantic Coast Conference championship and put the UM program deeper in despair.
"It [stinks] to be in this position," UM right guard Derrick Morse said. "But we have to toughen up and put it behind us."
Added UM center Anthony Wollschlager: "Coach [Larry] Coker said we're going to see which guys are made of what, and go from there. You can't pack it in. Bad things happen in life. We won't pack it in."
The Hurricanes (5-3, 2-2) are now grasping at the ever-so-slim chance of the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 4-1), fellow members of the ACC's Coastal Division, losing two of their three remaining conference games (at North Carolina State, at North Carolina and Duke). UM would then have to win its four remaining games against Virginia Tech, at Maryland, at Virginia and Boston College to get into the ACC title game.
