Oct. 27--On the eve Kelly Gray turned 40, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx urged the audience at his concert in Boston to scream "Happy Birthday, Kelly."
That thrilled Gray, the former St. Johnmodel and executive who stood in the front row of the amphitheater stuffed with 15,000 fans.
"It was my best birthday ever," she said of that September day. "Having a rock star for a partner certainly has its advantages."
Gray has teamed up with Sixx to design an expensive and edgy men's clothing line called Royal Underground. They make an odd pair. She was long linked to a knit luxury label worn by ladies like Condoleezza Rice. He's the seriously tattooed bassist and songwriter for a heavy-metal band.
On Monday, 28 shops including Nordstromand Neiman Marcus, many of the same upscale department stores that carry St. John suits, will stock Gray's and Sixx's winter collection.
Gray is now hopping city to city on tour with Motley Crue. Between concerts, she and Sixx squeeze in work for their Newport Beach brand's fall line for next year, meetings with retailers and visits to the stores their clothes will hang in.
