Oct. 25--Darien Haywood, 17, realized dropping out of high school was a bad idea only after he was shot in his leg during a gang fight.
More than two years later, Haywood is poised to graduate in June from Olive-Harvey Middle College, an alternative high school on the South Side. He has college plans and aspirations to become a plastic surgeon. Haywood told his turnaround story Tuesday to members of a new state task force, whose focus is on re-enrolling dropouts. Haywood sought to show that young people can change with some help. The teens figure out they made a bad choice to leave high school after they face unemployment and too many idle days filled with empty television programs.
