Oct. 25--The American Heritage boys' and girls' golf teams have each put themselves in position to win the Class 1A state championship.
After Tuesday's first round at the Links at Point West in Vero Beach, the Heritage girls' team is 10 strokes back of Bradenton Prep. The Patriots have an uphill battle to win a second consecutive state title. "Last year we were one stroke back at this point," Heritage coach Gary Braeseke said. "We'll be the first out [today] and have quite a hill to climb." Keeping the Patriots within striking distance was junior Monica Miller with a 1-under par 71. Shelby Coyle had a 79, while Kyle Roig and Kaylin Yost each had an 80. "Monica didn't didn't leave too many shots out there, though she did lip out two eagle chances," Braeseke said.
