Zlata Filipovic remembers when her childhood was stolen from her. She was 12 years old, and war had crept into her happy life in Sarajevo. "I recall being aware that suddenly I didn't have it anymore," she says. She found refuge by writing in her diary. Her journal, known as Mimmy, became the 1993 international best seller "Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo," earning her the nickname "the Anne Frank of Sarajevo" and allowing her and her family to escape from Bosnia.

Now 25, Filipovic has coedited a new book with English poet Melanie Challenger, an anthology of journal entries written by children during the wars and violent conflicts of the past century. "Paroles d'Enfants Dans la Guerre" (Editions XO. 454 pages ) includes firsthand accounts of everything from the first and second world wars to the Vietnam War, the Balkan wars and the latest war in Iraq.
