Oct. 15--South Mecklenburg High School's PTSA had a going-away surprise for Marian Yates when she retired as principal Sept. 29.
They announced the start of a scholarship fund in Yates' name.
She concluded a 37-year career as an educator. Yates had been South Mecklenburg's principal for the past six years. She ended on a high note, being named Wachovia Principal of the Year in North Carolina last year.
"I have told many people my decision to retire has been the hardest decision I have ever had to make -- much because of my school family," Yates said in a message to the school's students and staff.
