Oct. 15--The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board approved contracts Tuesday night for projects at three schools in the central part of the city, including demolition of Marie G. Davis Middle School. The Marie G. Davis project has triggered some controversy. Critics, including school board member Larry Gauvreau, disagree with plans to replace the school with a new facility, saying classrooms at nearby schools are vacant and that the money is needed more for construction of new schools in fast-growing suburban areas.
