IRS pulls plug on electronic filing services. (Internal Revenue Service)

The Internal Revenue Service has pulled the plug on dozens of Dallas-area online tax reporting companies.

The IRS canceled agreements that let 44 local tax preparers process income tax returns electronically through the revenue service's computers after finding problems, said IRS spokesman Bill Moore.

"We have to ensure that they are meeting their obligations," said Moore.

He wouldn't identify which companies or the specific practices that led the IRS to take legal steps to remove participants from the electronic filing system. The crackdown comes amid growing national concern over fraudulent use of electronic tax filing, which is designed to speed …
