American Le Mans Series boss Scott Atherton always tags his speech at the traditional Friday press conference during Petit Le Mans week as his "State of the Series'' address. Perhaps that's why he decided to take a leaf out of the enlightened modern politician's book by uttering those fateful words, "We got it wrong.''
"An organization that doesn't make mistakes is an organization that doesn't do anything,'' he said. The mistakes refer to the first attempts by the ALMS and its sanctioning body, IMSA, at what they call "performance balancing.'' That means pegging back the performance of the faster cars to prevent domination by one brand.
The problem was that the ALMS upset a lot of people, including those it was trying to help, and confused a whole lot more. The major issue was a constant tinkering of the GT1 rules that appeared to be based not on empirical data but on the volume of complaints in smoke-filled rooms.
