A setback for Loeb
Reigning WRC champ Sebastien Loeb's bid to claim a third straight title suffered a major setback after the Frenchman broke his arm while riding a mountain bike. He will be out of action until at least the Rally Australia at the end of the month-the round that follows Turkey-and could even sit out the rest of the season.
Loeb holds a 35-point lead over Ford driver Marcus Gronholm heading into Turkey. Loeb needed to finish the Turkish event only fourth overall to clinch the title. He could still do so: If Gronholm finishes lower than third, Loeb will be champion.
IRL hits the beach
At Daytona International Speedway, the IRL conducted a compatibility test on a 10-turn, 2.73-mile road course. Five drivers logged 1331 miles in front of a large two-day media turnout, and the course was slightly lengthened in the final 30 minutes.
IRL president Brian Barnhart emphasized that no progress has been made toward the track hosting a race as early as 2008, but he conceded that the Indy cars appear capable of competing there.
