NASCAR calls this stretch of the season a chase. Sunday it was chaos.
The Banquet 400 winner coasted through the final lap with his engine void of fuel. But Tony Stewart lost only five seconds off his large lead because second-place Casey Mears similarly ran the tank dry.
The 10-man playoff race, affectionately referred to as the Chase for the Nextel Cup, took a wild shakeup in the waning laps. Jimmie Johnson lost the race because of a pair of miscues. Jeff Gordon dropped out with a faulty fuel pump.
