Oct. 12--ANGIER -- When Jeff and Shirley Zimmer bought their four-acre homestead in northern Harnett County in 2003, their intent was to escape the world of planned subdivisions.
The patriarch of a family of talented motocross riders, Jeff Zimmer, 35, wanted a place where his five children could race their bikes free of suburban encroachment.
But three months after the family moved, all the land surrounding the Zimmers was put under contract by a Raleigh developer.
"We were heartbroken," said Shirley Zimmer, 41. She noted that the family had hoped to purchase more surrounding land after they sold their previous home.…
