Contraceptive gets OK for premenstrual disorders.

Oct. 7--Berlex Inc., a Wayne-based maker of health-care products, said Friday that its oral contraceptive has received federal approval for use against severe forms of premenstrual disorders common among women who take birth-control pills.

The contraceptive, called Yaz, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March solely for preventing pregnancies. Approval for the second use came late Thursday.

Results from clinical trials showed that Yaz also is effective in treating disorders such as bloating, headaches and mood swings that affect the quality of life of women who take oral contraceptives, according to a …
