Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) develops early in children infected with HIV and generally has a poor outcome, British researchers report ("Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia in Vertically Acquired HIV Infection in the British Isles," Archives of Disease in Childhood, March 1994;70(3):241-244).

D.M. Gibb, with colleagues from the Institute of Child Health, St. Mary's Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children, London; and the City Hospital, Edinburgh, sent questionnaires to pediatricians throughout the British Isles who had reported PCP and HIV infection via the British Pediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU).
