Oct. 6--Some of the Charlotte area's top-scoring high schools didn't advance student achievement enough last year to qualify for teacher bonuses, state high school ratings released Thursday show.
But two schools -- northeast Charlotte's Vance High and West Iredell High -- ranked among the state's highest for student progress, based on a new state formula to gauge academic gains.
Elementary and middle school ratings are delayed until Nov. 1 because officials are analyzing results of a new math test given in grades three through eight.
North Carolina's "ABC" ratings can be confusing. Successful high schools are expected to have most students earning grade-level scores on state exams given at the end of several math, science, English and social studies classes. This year, 10th-grade writing tests were included for the first time.
