Best news of the Champ Car weekend: A walking, talking, joking Cristiano da Matta flew home to Miami Sept. 22. On Aug. 3, RuSport driver da Matta was testing at Road America when he struck a deer that ran onto the track. He was airlifted to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin, in a coma. Da Matta's brain injury was so severe that his life was in jeopardy, and even if he lived, doctors advised family that he might never awaken.

Surgeons removed a third of da Matta's skull, which allowed his swelling brain to expand. Doctors did not replace that portion of his skull until a week before da Matta was released from the hospital. His recovery is "just amazing," said Paul ...
