The use of the Isolator blood culture tube with BACTEC 12B medium is contraindicated for mycobacterial blood cultures, suggested researchers from North Carolina.

While the incidence of mycobacteremia previously was considered uncommon, such incidence has dramatically increased in patients with AIDS, noted Benedict Wasilauskas, Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Robert Morrell Jr., North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem.
