COWELL: THE FACTS.
* Born in Brighton, on October 7 1959 (happy 47th birthday this Saturday, Simon), Cowell was raised in Elstree, Herts.
* His father Eric Cowell was a music industry executive in his own right, and his brother Nicholas Cowell is now a property magnate.
* One of Cowell's greatest inspirations is Pete Waterman, who produced hits by one of his first big successes Sinitta in the Eighties, helping deliver Cowell's Fanfare label some of its first hits. "A genius", says Cowell.
* Cowell first joined BMG in 1990, forming the IQ label, before switching to Arista as A&R executive a year later. In 1994, he transferred to RCA, a label which included among its senior executives Jeremy Marsh, Hugh Goldsmith and David Joseph. He has remained with the company ever since.
* Cowell's life changed forever when he appeared as a judge on Pop Idol in 2001. The show delivered Will Young and Gareth Gates in its first series - and turned Cowell into a TVstar.
* In 2000, Cowell received the Music Week Awards A&R prize, as credit for his success in launching acts including Westlife and Robson & Jerome.
