Ferry services float bids for key high-traffic route. (Blue and Gold Fleet; Harbor Bay Maritime)

Two local ferry companies are vying for the contract to service the busy Oakland-Alameda-San Francisco route.

The route, which is subsidized by the City of Alameda and the Port of Oakland, is currently being served by the Blue and Gold Fleet, owned by Pier 39. But its one-year contract expires March 14 and Harbor Bay developer Ron Cowan is bidding against the Blue and Gold Fleet in the hope that he can unseat it.

Cowan's Harbor Bay Maritime is already running a ferry service between San Francisco and his Harbor Bay development in Alameda.
