It's no wonder that Superman Returns hit big at the box office--there's something in it for everyone. While guys were marveling at the superhero's special powers (and all those special effects), women were no doubt admiring the caped crusader's more earthly attributes ... and we're not just talking about his buns of steel.

What sets the Superman character apart from most mere mortals is his gallantry, which seems all but extinct on this planet, according to a recent Cosmo Web poll. In it, 87 percent of readers said they wished guys did more polite and romantic things, like opening doors and showing up with flowers occasionally. So why aren't men minding their manners these days?

Believe it or not, women's hard-won sexual entitlement may have something to do with it. Notes John Marshall Townsend, PhD, professor of anthropology at Syracuse University: Because women now sleep with multiple partners, they've become less choosy about whom they bring to bed. Unfortunately, that means men don't have to rely as much on their wooing skills to encourage a woman to hit the sack with them.

Just as the spectrum of acceptable behavior for women has broadened over time, so have the roles for men.
