As has been well documented some growers in the United States had an unfortunate introduction to micronutrients when they applied sewage sludge. This caused an excessive accumulation of Cu and led to phytotoxic levels. The story of what had been a couple of isolated incidents became sensationalised by the everyday media in a series of articles entitled Fear in the Fields. Foliar application of the micronutrients is now recognised as an effective way of minimising the risk of phytotoxicity, while a wide range of micronutrient suppliers are at hand to offer advice and tailormade products to meet the needs of specific crops and growing conditions.
