Union Pacific Railroad is tripling intermodal capacity in the Salt Lake City area to take advantage of an import market that remains hot despite signs of a cooling economy.
Last month, UP opened its $83 million, 260-acre intermodal terminal west of the city that will replace a smaller terminal downtown. It has capacity for 250,000 container or trailer lifts per year with additional space to expand. It has four tracks with capacity to handle the unloading of 75 intermodal "double-stack" railcars and an additional five tracks to stage rail cars prior to unloading or loading.
