To the surprise of many, when Oregon teenager Alesha Coleman won a business plan writing contest, she passed up a $10,000 college scholarship for the chance to become a franchise owner of a MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery.
As part of a contest offered nationwide in conjunction with the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, MaggieMoo's International LLC had promised to give the winner the scholarship or to waive the ice cream chain's $30,000 franchise fee. MaggieMoo's, based in Columbia, Md., owns six stores and franchises nearly 200 across the United States.
