Sep. 22--Jay Louis-Prescott has no worries about the man he groomed to replace him. The longtime Birmingham Brother Rice boys soccer coach's protege is Angel Ojeda, who was Louis-Prescott's assistant for three years. Brother Rice was last year's Division 1 state runner-up. The 1-0 loss to Warren De La Salle in the state finals was Louis-Prescott's final game after 17 years heading the program. Louis-Prescott's tenure included a shared state title in 2000 and a second-place finish last year. He had been considering stepping down for a while, and chose this time because he felt Ojeda was ready.
"Part of the decision is knowing that someone who loves this school and soccer program is ready to take over," Louis-Prescott said. Over the last three years, "I started giving him more and more responsibility, letting him run drills, make substitutions and working him from assistant coach to co-coach." Ojeda, his players and Louis-Prescott say, is a motivator. The first-year coach is intense and knows the game well. He played four years at Brother Rice, graduated in 1993 and played at Pepperdine. Louis-Prescott was in his first year as varsity coach in 1989, Ojeda's freshman season. Ojeda's senior season year, 1992, was Louis-Prescott's breakout season, when the team went 17-3-1.
