Sep. 21--MOORESVILLE -- Technically, it was just an early season game that would determine first place in the North Piedmont Conference.

But for Lake Norman High, it was also a statement. The Lake Norman boys' soccer team played to its No. 1 N.C. 3A ranking with a 4-0 victory against No. 6 Mooresville on Wednesday. Since the school opened five years ago, Lake Norman has struggled against cross-town rival Mooresville. Going into the game, Lake Norman carried a 2-5-2 record against the Blue Devils, including a loss in the semifinals of the state playoffs at Mooresville last year. Mooresville eventually lost in the state final.…
