Driver education
Congratulations on producing one of your best issues ever. You put the responsibility for teen drivers on us, the parents. I couldn't believe how obvious the answer is after reading the articles. Cars are deadly machines, and impulsive teens should be trained at length to operate them. As a surgeon at a trauma hospital, I see many tragic cases of young lives cut short from motor vehicle collisions. It's time we all took more responsibility as you state.
John Sabra, Austin, Texas
Young drivers' sense of invulnerability will be difficult to modify with commercials, movies, TV and video games all showing high-speed driving and crashes with no consequences. Teens have been observing this for 16 years and now they will try to duplicate those observed skills when they get the opportunity, not when mom and dad are along, but when they get the car alone and/or with friends.
Jim Fairchild, Mesa, Ariz.
Our BMW club has held car-control clinics for almost 10 years. For the last three years we have been involved with Street Survival skills through the BMW Foundation. The student fee is nominal and instructors volunteer their time. Our biggest problem is getting parents involved. When I tell them about the school they react positively, but have all sorts of excuses as to why their teens can't attend. We need to reach the parents and get them involved.
