This slender book improves our understanding of Japanese direct investment (JDI) in the United States, especially in California: causes, history, size, locational and industrial patterns, management practices and attitudes toward unions. Japanese-owned firms employ 500,000 American workers, of whom 100,000 are in California; of these, 20,000 are manufacturing workers.
