CINCINNATI -- History was made just a few days ago as more than 400 regional May Department Co. stores became Macy's, turning New York's biggest department store into the largest department store chain in the country with approximately 800 stores.

And with Macy's popping up from coast to coast, that means many cities have lost stores that were once considered city landmarks--Filene's of Boston, Kaufmann's of Pittsburgh, Famous-Barr of St. Louis and, perhaps most notably, Chicago's Marshall Field's store on State Street, which will serve as the new flagship for Macy's North Division.
