A 28-year-old single mother of an 8-year-old, mentally disabled boy had laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery following years of trying diet and exercise without success. Although surgery proceeded uneventfully, she began demonstrating symptoms of an obstruction shortly after discharge. She was followed for about two and a half weeks, but ultimately the obstruction ruptured. After multiple surgeries and transfer to another hospital, the woman died.
