Following NASCAR's overhaul in 2004, the NHRA altered how it determines season titles, beginning next season. All four pro divisions are included, and the racers will experience several new wrinkles, including more gut checks.
Consider:
Points are tallied at the season's first 17 races as is done now. This is now the Countdown to Eight. After that 17th race, Aug. 16-19 in Reading, Pennsylvania, the top eight drivers in each class advance to the next round. They have point totals adjusted in increments of 10.
As racing continues the title contenders get four races-starting with the stressful U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis over Labor Day-to score as many points as possible. This is the Countdown to Four. After the Oct. 5-7 race at Richmond, Virginia, the top four in each class advance to the next round; again point totals are adjusted in increments of 10.
