Byline: Curt Cavin
The biggest, baddest drag racer of Labor Day weekend's 52nd Mac Tools U.S. Nationals arrived in Indianapolis a decade ago as a quiet rookie in 1996.
Tony Schumacher was the last qualifier for the 16-man Top Fuel elimination round in 1996, faced with tackling No. 1 Blaine Johnson right off the bat. Johnson was killed during a qualifying run before their meeting, and Schumacher advanced to the finals before losing to Cory McClenathan.
That was Schumacher's first national NHRA event. He had received his competition license just a week prior.
Now he owns Indy.
The first thing he did after beating Brandon Bernstein in Monday's final was to dedicate the win to Johnson, whose brother Alan is Schumacher's crew chief.
"This trophy was meant to sit on his trophy case,'' Schumacher said of the fallen driver. "I had just met him the day before. For me it was like, `Welcome to NHRA drag racing.'''
