Sep. 13--New medical investigations reveal that painkillers in the same class as the discontinued Vioxx can cause problems from the very first dose, and that people are much better off taking naproxen, a medicine cabinet standby with a less risky profile. In two retrospective studies that examine COX-2 inhibitors and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs -- NSAIDs -- researchers have further unearthed problems with Merck's drug, Vioxx, which the company withdrew from the market three years ago. Scientists have now concluded: Anyone seeking relief from chronic pain would be better served by the NSAID naproxen, which can be taken in conjunction with a type of drug called a proton-pump inhibitor to prevent stomach and intestinal irritation.
