Thomson Consumer Electronics (parent company of RCA, Proscan, and GE) and DirecTV, Inc. (a subsidiary of Hughes Communications, Inc.) unveiled working prototypes of its new RCA DSS digital satellite system scheduled for introduction in April 1994.

This is a digital system, offering 400 to 500 lines of resolution and CD-quality audio. Compared to the 330 lines of resolution currently available on television, or the 260 lines of resolution on VHS tapes, this is a quantum step up.
