Those of us whose birthdays coincide roughly with the early days of television--the 1950s--grew up in a time when test pilot Chuck Yeager was strutting his right stuff in edge-of-the-envelope aircraft technology coast to coast. Back then, it was not unusual to look up to see a jet streaking high across a clear sky, and then start counting off the seconds until the real fun arrived--the sonic boom. While no one questions then or now--the power of the visual, it was really the body-thumping sound that made the biggest impact of all. (And our parents wondered why we loved rock 'n' roll!)
