Besides a handsome laudatio of Jordan by Horst Fuhrmann and an epilogue by K. F. Werner, the collection comprises ten papers on aspects of north-south relations during Germany's later Middle Ages. The coherence laudably aimed at was not wholly achieved. For the emergent picture is rather of two Germanies facing different ways, though neither could quite turn its back on the other, since significant intermediate zones allowed influences to percolate.
