We all loathe enforcers, drivers who hang in the left lane at precisely the speed limit, mile after tedious mile.
Yet who among us hasn't mused that traffic might flow more smoothly if someone were In Charge, and that we could do the job?
It happened to me again after the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. That's a wonderful event, one of my all-time favorites. The setting is perfect; the atmosphere just right. It's disturbing how many of those "vintage'' machines I remember as cutting-edge, but at least they are still running, not rusting.
Post-race traffic, though, needs regulation.
That's been true all over the country for years, but I think it's worse since NASCAR went national. When new race fans see sedans going fast, they want to go fast. When they see Dodges running close together, they figure drafting up Highway 101 would be fun.
And tailgaters, sadly, activate my inner enforcer. For 99.7 percent of the miles I drive, I'm the poster adult for SLOW TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT. Overtake me and I'll let you by, always.
