2007 Audi Q7 4.2
Date in fleet: July 31-Aug. 14 As-tested price: $63,770 Powertrain: 4.2-liter V8; awd, six-speed automatic Output: 350 hp @ 6800 rpm, 325 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm Curb weight: 5467 lbs Fuel Economy (EPA combined/ AW observed): 15.9/11.14 mpg
HART: This is a fine luxury ute, if that is what you're looking for, with all the accoutrements of Audi's full-size car offerings. The execution, especially inside the cabin, is top-notch. I'm guessing the Q7 would be okay for some moderate to heavy off-roading, and this V8 is certainly potent enough, but after looking at the mpg, I'd much rather have a copy of the Euro-spec diesel model we had in here a few months ago; $50 fill-ups are a big wakeup call.
RAYNAL: This thing feels every bit the 5400 pounds it is. It drives heavy, as does its Volkswagen platform mate, the Touareg. I remember Audi boss Martin Winterkorn telling us the Q7 is "the coupe in the SUV segment.'' Well, coupe connotes sporty, and this thing isn't that. It's more like the heavyweight in the SUV segment.
It is beautifully built and comfy and almost feels like a heavy A8 sedan. The engine has some guts, and the trans is ultra smooth.
The price shocked me, and not in a good way. Audi fans wanting a ute might consider it, if they haven't already bought a competitor (the Q7 is way late to the party). I am not so sure about anybody else. Could this be Audi's first dud in a long, long time?
ROCA: Even knowing Audi has the "finest interiors in the business,'' the Q7's still manages to be impressive when you see it in person. The roofliner material is gorgeous, as is the sunroof screen. But-and I'm sure this is because I just got out of the mega GMC Yukon Denali-there are parts ...
