Rana Foroohar claims ("unlikely Boomtowns?" July 3/July 10), that the typical population growth rate within a megacity has probably slowed to a minimum over the last few years. I agree with her if we are talking about U.S. megacities. But it is dangerous to trust the measuring data blindly and to omit one of the greatest problems some megacities have: people constantly moving from poor, rural areas to the slums. By 2000, 18 of the world's 23 megacities, with their enormous and overcrowded slums, were located in the developing world. And the population growth rate in slums is higher than in any other environment. Mexico City's population jumped by more than 2 million ...
