When Karen * came home from her first family Thanksgiving as a "grownup," she opened the door to her tiny, railroad apartment in Washington, D.C., and burst into tears. Her place had been ransacked. Closets were dumped, power cords cut, a jewelry box stood empty. It was the second time in six months she'd been burglarized, but when the police arrived, they told her she was lucky. Why?
