Sep. 1--Public school test scores in Monterey County are being received with mixed reactions from local educators.
Results from the Academic Performance Index, which keeps track of school performance statewide, and Adequate Yearly Progress, which monitors progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, were reported Thursday.
Countywide, 51 percent of schools met their API growth targets, compared to 52 percent statewide.
While many schools met statewide goals, success was more elusive for schools where the majority of students speak Spanish as their first language.
"We want to see schools' improvements as a whole," said Nancy Kotowski, Monterey County's school superintendent-elect.
Countywide, 38 percent of students are designated English language learners, compared with 24 percent statewide.
