Music website and record label Drowned In Sound founder Sean Adams is aiming to utilise the brand's sixth year in business this autumn as an opportunity to expand its services.
A raft of live activity in October will mark the occasion, spearheaded by a birthday celebration at Barfly London on October 10. The gig, which will feature performances from four bands, will also serve as a vehicle to raise awareness about a new digital-only singles club which is set to launch next January. The club will operate on a subscription- only basis and Adams ambitiously plans to offer 45 download-only singles throughout the year.
"The inspiration really came from a frustration of putting out physical singles and losing money. I think we're the only people that released a Kaiser Chiefs single and lost money," says Adams. "Through the website we can have the equivalent of a MySpace but offer people something tangible. In essence, it allows me to get involved with more bands that I like and put them on the global map."
The strategy was put to the test this year with digital-only releases from Emmy The Great, Les Incompetents and Bat For Lashes, all of which sold between 500 and 700 units online.
Additional live activity will include a stage at the Iceland Airwaves festival on October 19; Halloween Party at the Hammersmith Palais on October 31 and a presence at both In The City in Manchester and CMJ in New York.
